1970 Custom Timber 48ft Ketch for sale exclusively with DBY Boat Sales.
It's not every day you get to board a vessel like the Wicked Wench. To save you Googling Wicked Wench was the original name of Captain Jack Sparrow's ship The Black Pearl in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
This Wicked Wench began her life in Blackwattle Bay and was built by hand by a Dutchman called Henke and his wife. The wood for the ribs and keel was sourced from the old wool stores that used to stand around the waterside in Darling Harbour.
Timbers for the deck were stripped from the Manly steam ferry Dee Why before she was taken out of service in 1968 and later sunk off Long Reef.
Launched around 1970, Wicked Wench is a 48 foot ketch displaying a raking bow with a unique tumble home stern, and distinctive twin portholes in her transom. With her beautifully constructed timber masts, built by one of Sydney's finest shipwrights, she displays a unique appearance, and it's when you go below that things start to get really interesting.
Wicked Wench's layout is anything but typical, and is made up of a series of compartments, from the business-like forepeak, to the old-world main cabin, to the intimacy of the low set aft cabin, with her transom port holes, Wicked Wench is - different - but in an intriguing, and quirky way.
Every structural element of Wicked Wench's hull is riveted and roved - occasionally, when her builder ran short of roves, penny or half penny coins were employed, giving an interesting variation to the term of putting one's money into a boat!
She was surveyed in May of this year and her surveyor reported things like:
Hull:
"Carvel planked in hardwood with a build heel.
All seams and plank nibs are tight with minimal movement.
Garboards and rabbet line seams are tight.
All planking is rove rivetted.
Topsides:
"Carvel planked in hardwood, nailed and rove fastened.
Robust frames and timbers well-spaced.
Sheer clamp, deck shelf, and stringers are hardwood supported on grown hanging and or lodging knees.
The planking is fair to the eye with no movement of seams, butts, and nib ends.
Opening bronze portlights fitted with no water ingress issues discovered".
Decks:
European Cedar triple planked.
Solid sawn beams supported by grown knees.
All decks firm under foot with no decay issues discovered.
All decks are firm under foot.
Robust structure throughout".
Those grown knees literally need to be seen to be believed... I hope our photo's do them justice.
Contact us for a copy of the report, it's not the sort of survey report one comes across every day either. She is a really solid ship.
As for the more mundane details, she has bunks for 7, a full galley with fridge, freezer, microwave, gas stove, etc. She has a well maintained 120hp Ford Lehman diesel swinging a big 3 blade fixed prop. She is lacking only sails, a few winches, and a few bits of running rigging and she is ready to take you just about anywhere.
